Jackets blast Griffins

Union's defense ruled the night, as the Yellow Jackets defeated Fairfield Central 36-8 in a physical football game on Friday night at Union County Stadium.
Union's defense held Fairfield scoreless until the end of the game when the Griffins scored against the second string. The Jacket constantly harassed Griffin quarterback Jonte Long, recording several sacks. Union held Fairfield to just 58 yards rushing on the night and 219 yards of total offense.
"I tell you right now, our defense is awesome," said Anthony. "They're playing so good."
But despite the score, Fairfield Central came to play and it was a battle.
"They're very, very physical," said Anthony. "I'm real proud of the way our kids played, I thought they bowed up and played physical with them. It's a 'W,' but it was a tough football game.
"This will be good for our kids, even Spartanburg was not this physical. Them kids came to smack us in the mouth."
But the Griffins got smacked, as Union's offense also was on fire, racking up 358 yards, 220 yards on the ground. Union jumped out to 22-0 lead at the half and didn't look back.
Late in the third quarter, Tyrone Chick caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Justin Knox to put the icing on the cake. Nick Maness kicked the PAT.
In the fourth quarter, Rashaad Jackson blocked a punt, James Holley picked up the ball and returned it to the Griffin 12-yard line. That set up a 2-yard Stevens touchdown run and Maness' PAT gave Union a 36-0 lead.
Late in the game, Fairfield avoided the shutout, when backup quarterback Chanin Johnson picked up a fumbled snap to score on a 3-yard touchdown run. Jermele Eigner ran for the two-point conversion.
That was little solace for the Griffins, especially after the thumping they took in the first half.
The game started with a bang. Lott caught a 50-yard bomb from Knox, setting up an 8-yard touchdown run by Knox. Maness' PAT was good.
Rashaad Jackson sacked Griffin quarterback Jonte Long for a six yard loss on fourth down, pinning Fairfield Central at its 8-yard line. The ensuing punt snap sailed through the back of the end zone, giving Union's defense the safety.
Early in the second quarter, two long Knox runs and hard running by Stevens set up a 4-yard touchdown run by De'Rail Sims. The two-point conversion failed, but Union led 15-0.
Kendrick Lyles intercepted a Long pass and returned it 85 yards to set up a 14-yard C.J. Lott touchdown reception from Knox. Maness' PAT was good.
Union (3-0) travels to Gaffney Friday for a battle of unbeatens.
