Greer takes third straight Jacket Bowl

GREER - Greer took command of the Region III-3A title race with a 24-21 come from behind win over Union on Friday night at Dooley Field.

Chad Cartwright hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Travis Gilliam with 4:04 remaining for the winning score. Cartwright was Greer's most lethal weapon, with 11 catches for 189 yards.

Union had two chances to respond to Cartwrightıs heroics. Steven Brewington was stopped short on an 8-yard scramble, needing 19 yards on fourth down with 3:04 remaining. On another fourth down play, L.J. Dye had what would have been a first down reception at midfield jarred lose with 35 seconds left. Dye had four receptions for 152 yards and two touchdowns to lead Union.

It wasnıt quite enough, as Greer took a knee to survive.

³They played hard and we played hard,² said Union coach Tommy Bobo. ³They made the plays late that kind of swung the momentum. It was a good game, unfortunately we didnıt get quite enough done to get the win.²

Union could have clinched the Region III-3A title with a win. Greer (7-2, 4-0) now is in the driverıs seat for the championship, needing a win against Clinton next week. Union still has a chance at the title with some help from Clinton and the right tie breaking scenario.

Union (5-4, 3-1) finishes the regular season hosting Clover next week. The game will be critical for playoff positioning.
³Weıve got to regroup, come out and play hard Friday night,² said Bobo. ³Itıll be senior night. Hopefully, weıll get a good weekıs practice from them. Weıll see what happens and then you go into the next season (playoffs).²

Both teams were in playoff form Friday night. The quarterbacks aired it out with Brewington passing for 226 yards and three touchdowns, and Gilliam 236 yards and two touchdowns.

Greer took a 17-14 lead early in the second half when Cartwright made a one-handed 23-yard touchdown catch from Gilliam. The score was set up when Dye mishandled a Greer punt and the Jackets recovered on Unionıs 25-yard line.

But Union answered quickly, driving 80 yards in 11 plays to score. Dye caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Brewington, who also connected with Dontee Stewart (13 yards) and Mikey Callahan (16 yards) on the drive. Union led 21-17 with five minutes left in the third quarter.

Greer drove 69 yards in 13 plays, advancing to Unionıs 1-yard line, but the Jacket defense held when a fourth down pass fell incomplete. Unionıs offense went three and out and had to punt, giving Greer good field position, but Jonathan Means intercepted Gilliam on the 1-yard line to again deny Greer.

Union had trouble sustaining a drive and had to punt, giving Greer excellent field position once again. This time Greer capitalized with Cartwrightıs game winning catch.

Union led 14-10 at the half.

Dye caught a 49-yard bomb from Brewington, capping an 8 play, 74-yard drive.

Union attempted an onside kick, but Greer recovered at midfield. But the Jacket defense came up big, with the front stopping Gilliam for a two-yard loss on fourth down at the 1-yard line.

Taking over at its 3-yard line, Union marched 97 yards in six plays for its second score. Pip Smith caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Brewington. The drive was highlighted by a 61-yard reception by Dye.

Greer got going late in the second quarter. Daniel Fiske kicked a 35-yard field goal with 3:55 left in the half, set up by a 43-yard Cartwright reception. Greer got the ball right back when Cedric McGowan intercepted a Brewington pass.

Greer capitalized, going 62 yards in eight plays to score. Gilliam ran for a 6-yard touchdown, going airborne at the end, with 1:04 left in the half. The drive was highlighted by catches of 23 and 16 yards by Cartwright and a 17-yard run by Gilliam.

Unionıs defense contained Greerıs chief offensive threat Arthur Sitton, who managed 63 yards on 21 carries. Union couldnıt do much on the ground either, with Kendrick Neal gaining 55 yards on 20 carries.
