Massey named Union athletic director
By BRIAN WHITMORE Sports Editor
Mike Massey is the new athletic director at Union High School. Massey replaces Mike Anthony, who resigned as head football coach in January. He had worked for two and a half years under Anthony as assistant athletic director. I'm excited, said Massey. This is a great athletic program. It's going to be a challenge. We're so successful and want to keep going in the right direction. We've got good things going and want to expand on them.
Massey takes over a large athletic program. Union offers varsity sports in football, volleyball, tennis, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, soccer, cross country, track and golf. Massey is an assistant football coach and head coach of the cross country and track teams. He said he'll likely give up coaching football, in light of his new position, and will evaluate if he has to give up other coaching duties.
We've grown so much, this has become a full-time job, said Massey. Balancing AD with coaching is a decision we'll have to make. I don't want to cheat either side. Massey also will oversee a transitional period at Union High.
The Yellow Jackets will have a new head football coach and women's basketball coach next year. We want to make those transitions as smooth as possible, he said. We want to give our teams the help they need to stay successful. Massey said Anthony set high standards as AD. He said the Hall of Fame and corporate sponsors are two projects Anthony founded that will continue. I thank God for this opportunity, said Massey. I thank the district for having confidence in me.
