Union struggles against Griffins

WINNSBORO - Union just couldn't score and lost its second straight game. Fairfield Central improved to 4-0, defeating the Yellow Jackets 13-2 on Saturday night.

The Griffins scored on their third play from scrimmage. Larry Perry caught a short toss over the middle from quarterback Chanin Johnson and turned it into a 48-yard touchdown.

Union's only points came when Geromey Jeter sacked Johnson in the end zone for a safety. The score was set up by a David Gregory punt that rolled dead at the 2. A high snap over Johnson's head resulted in the score.

With 17 seconds left in the first half, Cliff Evans caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Johnson, who was 4-of-11 for 69 yards on the night. The Griffins controlled the game with their ground attack, rushing for 113 yards on 42 carries and eating up a lot of clock. Evans was the workhorse, rushing 13 times for 36 yards.

Union's defense played well, holding Fairfield Central on four drives deep in Jacket territory. One Griffin drive reached the Union 6, but the Jackets held on downs. Another Fairfield Central threat ended with a Union interception.

The Jacket offense couldn't score, but was able to move the ball through the air, with Cameron Willis completing 14-of-35 passes for 167 yards to six different receivers.

But Willis threw two interceptions that killed drives and the Jacket rushing attack was non-existent, accounting for just 39 yards.

"We're not playing well offensively," said Union coach Tommy Bobo. Union (2-2) hosts York on Friday in the Hall of Fame Game.
