GREENVILLE - Union opened region play with a 38-0 rout of Wade Hampton on Friday night.
L.J. Mobley led the way with four catches for 149 yards and three touchdowns. In total, Union put up 337 yards passing. QB Cameron Willis was 13-of-22 with three scores. Rodrick Gilmore caught four passes for 109 yards.
Union had 124 yards on the ground, led by Freddie Bates with 52 yards and a touchdown.
Add in Brooke Jackson's first field goal, Billy Jennings' fumble return for a touchdown and a safety by the defense and it was a good night for the Jackets on both sides of the ball.
The defense held the Generals to 187 yards total offense and got the shutout.
"It's good to get that first win, to open the region with a win," said Union coach Tommy Bobo.
It wasn't a pretty game. Wade Hampton (2-2) turned the ball over seven times, five fumbles and two interceptions. Union gave up two interceptions and a fumble.
The Jackets were flagged 13 times for 133 yards.
"The penalties are killing us," said Bobo. "We had two touchdowns tonight called back. Those are the types of things that you can't overcome when you're playing a really talented team."
Union got the scoring started at the end of the first quarter. After the Jackets recovered a fumble, Mobley caught a 30-yard pass to help set up a 27-yard field goal by Jackson.
After a Jennings interception and a long Travis Sims catch, Willis found Mobley for a 38-yard touchdown strike.
The Jacket defense stopped Wade Hampton short on fourth down and Mobley caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from Willis. Jackson's kick gave Union a 16-0 halftime lead.
The second half was more of the same. After a Generals punt, Gilmore caught a 44-yard pass to set up a 10-yard Bates touchdown run. Jackson's kick was true.
Union went 83 yards on its next drive. Gilmore's 33-yard catch was a big play on the drive that ended with a 23-yard Mobley touchdown catch from Willis.
Jennings returned a fumble 65 yards for the Jackets' next score. In the fourth quarter, Union's defense recorded a safety to cap the scoring.
Union (1-3) hosts Clinton, which lost to Greer, next Friday.
"Our kids will enjoy this just a little bit, but we'll go to work Saturday
for an exciting game, a big game, Friday night" said Bobo. "Hopefully our
players will be up to the challenge."
