Union inducts 16 into athletic hall of fame

Some of Union and Sims high schools’ greatest athletes were honored Friday night during halftime of the Hall of Fame game.
This year, 16 athletes were inducted into the Union Athletic Hall of Fame. The Hall was started in 1998 and a committee makes the selections.

A list of the inductees with a short notation of their accomplishments is located at the bottom of this page.

This year’s inductees are: 

C.B. Jolly (‘50s) played football and baseball at Union. He was catcher on the 1952 state championship baseball team. 

Ronnie Lawson (‘54-‘58) was pitcher and an outfielder for Union’s baseball team. He was the captain of the ‘58 squad. 

Willie Hunter (‘55-‘59) lettered in football and baseball at Sims. He played first base for the Jackets and went on to play semi-pro baseball in Atlanta.

Billy Lawson (‘57-‘61) was a three sport athlete at Union, receiving five letters in baseball, four in football and two in basketball. He was MVP in baseball his junior and senior years. 

Morris Eison (‘62-‘65) played baseball at Sims. He was pitcher and had just two career losses. He led the team in hitting for three years and was part of the 1963 state championship team. 

Tommy Whitehead (‘62-‘65) played on the offensive and defensive lines, lettering three years in football. He also lettered in track, competing in shot put and discus. He is now a lieutenant colonel in the Army National Guard. 

Jimmy Kingsmore (‘62-‘65) played football and baseball at Union. He was among the toughest fullbacks of his era. 

Bryan McSwain (‘63-‘67) lettered in four sports at Union — three in football, two in track, two in basketball and one in baseball. 

Bob Quinn (‘63-‘67) played on Union’s offensive and defensive line — never leaving the field. He was most valuable sophomore in 1965. He lettered four years in baseball, having the highest batting average as a freshman. 

Ronnie Belue (‘65-‘67) was a three-year starter on Union’s football team. He played offense (running back), defense (nose guard) and special teams — never coming off the field. He earned a scholarship to Gardner-Webb. 

Tommy Sinclair (‘60s) was one of the toughest, yet smallest offensive lineman to play Union football. He is now brigadier general in the Army National Guard. 

Ronald Garner (‘66-‘70) was the best left-handed pitcher at Union with a 25-4 record his junior and senior years. He was the batting champ in 1970, leading the Jackets to play for the state championship. He went on to pitch at Newberry. 

William Browning (‘74) was a member of Union’s 1974 state championship baseball team. He was MVP as a pitcher and outfielder. He went on to play at Spartanburg Methodist. 

Kim O’Dell Winslow (‘80s) lettered five years in tennis at Union. She went 16-1 her senior year — a season record that still stands. 

Nancy O’Dell Keim (‘82-‘87) lettered six years in tennis at Union. She played at the No. 1 spot from 8th grade through her senior season. She was No. 1 doubles player in the state in 1988 and a Prince All-American. She had 87 singles wins at No. 1, a record that stands today. She played on scholarship at Converse. 

Stacey Simmons Kicidis (‘84-‘88) lettered five times in both tennis and softball at Union. She was a Prince honorable mention in tennis.
